OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY FINES LAID AGAINST TWO COMPANIES

Two Saskatchewan companies pleaded guilty to Occupational Health and Safety charges in provincial court.

Future Exteriors Ltd., has pleaded guilty on six counts in Saskatoon Provincial Court and been fined a total of $5,300.

The company was charged after two workers fell off of scaffolding on May 28, 2008, in Saskatoon. One of the men sustained injuries to his right arm and shoulder.

The charges related to inspection, assembly and security of scaffolding, failure to provide and maintain safe means of entrance to and exit from work and failure to provide a written progress report.

Three additional charges against Future Exteriors Ltd., were stayed.

In a separate incident Glen Peterson Construction Ltd., pleaded guilty to three charges in Estevan Provincial Court. The company was fined $5,620.

The charges resulted from a routine inspection of a construction site in Estevan on April 27, 2010. The Occupational Health and Safety officer observed three workers at the bottom of an unshored trench repairing a water leak.

The charges related to failing to ensure workers were protected from cave-ins or sliding materials, failing to ensure the supervisor ensured workers complied with OHS legislation and failing to provide a written progress report.

Charges related to the same incident against a supervisor and two workers employed by Glen Peterson Construction Ltd., were stayed.

Occupational Health and Safety works to eliminate workplace injuries and illnesses and conducts about 4,000 worksite inspections annually to ensure standards are known, understood and enforced.
