GROUP TO ADVISE ON $3 MILLION ANNUAL AUTISM FUNDING

On World Autism Awareness Day, April 2, Health Minister Don McMorris announced that an advisory group representing health care and community-based organizations will make recommendations on the most effective use of $3 million in annual provincial funding for autism services.

"About one in every 166 children born in Saskatchewan develops autism, and they need our help," McMorris said. "We will listen to the best advice on what combination of therapies, training and other supports will make the biggest difference for these children and their families."

Increased funding in 2007-2008 allowed for extensive training and capacity building of health care providers, educators, family members, and others involved with autistic children and adults. Advisory group members will begin meeting this spring to discuss and provide suggestions for new autism intervention services and supports.

Though little is known about the cause of autism spectrum disorder, early diagnosis and intervention are key to improving communication, socialization and other abilities.

On December 18, 2007, the United Nations General Assembly declared April 2 to be World Autism Awareness Day each year. For more information, visit www.worldautismawarenessday.org.
