News Release - April 2, 2008 GROUP TO ADVISE ON $3 MILLION ANNUAL AUTISM FUNDINGOn World Autism Awareness Day, April 2, Health Minister Don McMorris announced that an advisory group representing health care and community-based organizations will make recommendations on the most effective use of $3 million in annual provincial funding for autism services. "About one in every 166 children born in Saskatchewan develops autism, and they need our help," McMorris said. "We will listen to the best advice on what combination of therapies, training and other supports will make the biggest difference for these children and their families." Though little is known about the cause of autism spectrum disorder, early diagnosis and intervention are key to improving communication, socialization and other abilities. On December 18, 2007, the United Nations General Assembly declared April 2 to be World Autism Awareness Day each year.
