SASKATCHEWAN ATHLETES TOPS AT 2008 NORTH AMERICAN INDIGENOUS GAMES

Once again, Team Saskatchewan came out on top as the final medal tally was taken at the 2008 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) just completed in the Cowichan Valley in British Columbia. Saskatchewan brought home 120 medals more than their closest rival and captured over twice as many total points as the second place team.

Team Saskatchewan took the Games Overall Team Title with 94 gold, 81 silver and 68 bronze medals for a total of 243 overall and 1536 total points. Once final results were complied, Team B.C. came in second with a total of 113 medals and 723 points, while Team Ontario finished third. In total, Saskatchewan has won the team title six of the seven times the competitions have taken place.

"We have a strong tradition of doing well at the games," First Nations and Métis Relations Minister June Draude said. "Once again, Team Saskatchewan's hard work and dedication helped them win the Overall Team Title and the province couldn't be more proud of them - well done!"

"Congratulations to our athletes, coaches, volunteers and organizers," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Christine Tell said. "Participation in sport teaches one to stretch their limits, learn sportsmanship and discipline. We have such a core of fine young athletes; it bodes well for the future."

Ministers Draude and Tell attended the games on behalf of the Province to show support for Team Saskatchewan.

The Government of Saskatchewan contributed $115,000 to the provincial effort, the majority of it to help with transportation and logistics. "The North American Indigenous Games are an important part of the overall sport development system in Saskatchewan," said Minister Tell.

"The same dedication that carried these young athletes to victory will help them excel in school, careers and as future leaders," added Minister Draude.

The North American Indigenous Games are next scheduled to be held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 2011.
