MORE PRE-KINDERGARTEN PROGRAMS

The provincial government today announced an increase to the number of Pre-kindergarten (Pre-K) programs it supports by 15 in the upcoming school year, bringing the total number to 119 in 2006.

"The Government of Saskatchewan is committed to Early Learning and Child Care initiatives that support young children and their families," Learning Minister Deb Higgins said. "We believe that the investment in the early years is a sound investment in Saskatchewan's future."

Pre-kindergarten is a comprehensive initiative targeting children who may benefit from additional supports such as speech, language and social development programming. The majority of Pre-kindergarten programs are located in community schools and are provided in partnership with school divisions.

"Pre-kindergartens help give preschool children extra attention so they will be prepared to take advantage of their Pre-K-12 educational opportunities," Higgins said. "During Early Learning and Child Care Month, it is particularly important to recognize the significance of providing quality early learning opportunities for Saskatchewan's children."

"In the 15 years that I have been involved with Pre-K, I've witnessed the many benefits to both children and their families," Herchmer Community School Early Childhood teacher Peggy Adamack said. "Being in a community school setting further benefits Pre-K students and families with on-hand resources and access to professionals such as speech and language pathologists and learning assistants."

Since being implemented in 1996-97, the number of Pre-kindergarten programs has increased from 26 to 119. This year, approximately 1,900 three and four year old children and their families will benefit from Pre-kindergarten programs. It is anticipated that all 15 new Pre-kindergarten sites will be confirmed by June 30th, 2006, with implementation beginning in September 2006.
