News Release - July 12, 2011 PROVINCE HELPS REGINA HABITAT FOR HUMANITY BUILD A HOME FOR A PARTNER FAMILYA Habitat for Humanity partner family in Regina will soon realize their dream of home ownership, with $50,000 in funding assistance from the province through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation. "Our government strongly believes that Saskatchewan people should have the opportunity to own their own home, where they can work hard, build dreams, raise their families and take advantage of the unlimited opportunities that this province offers," Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude said. "This is a key component of our partnership with Habitat for Humanity as we work together to help give families a safe and stable environment to call home." "We are continually grateful for our partnership with Saskatchewan Housing Corporation and the Honourable Minister Draude for addressing the dire need of housing in our city and province," Habitat for Humanity Regina CEO Dennis Coutts said. "Thanks to the ongoing support, we are able to build sustainably, budget for future builds and establish more community partnerships in the private sector. Together, we are making a difference." Since 2009, the province has dedicated $3.5 million in funding for Habitat for Humanity affiliates and chapters in Regina, Saskatoon, Moose Jaw, Yorkton, Prince Albert and Lloydminster to help build a total of 70 homes across the province. To date, funding has provided 16 families with the opportunity to move into Habitat for Humanity homes. An additional 24 homes are currently under construction. Habitat is one of the few organizations whose distinct delivery model provides viable homeownership opportunities for low- to moderate-income families. Each selected Habitat partner family contributes 500 hours of sweat equity to build their home and other Habitat for Humanity homes and participates in valuable training and preparation sessions. In return, their lives are transformed by the positive experience of working with the Habitat for Humanity community and by the many benefits that come along with homeownership. Construction of the 1,400-square-foot, four-bedroom, two-storey home located at 1037 Rae Street in Regina is estimated to be completed in January 2012. -30- For more information, contact:
