NEW CAR SALES SPEED UP IN 2011

Saskatchewan's motor vehicles sales continued to climb at the close of 2011, with the latest reports from Statistics Canada showing sales in the province jumped by 7.3 per cent in 2011 compared to 2010 (seasonally unadjusted). This was the second highest percentage increase in Canada.

"Our strong economic growth is giving Saskatchewan families the opportunity to buy newer vehicles," Enterprise Minister Jeremy Harrison said. "Vehicle sales are going up thanks to an increasing population, strong wages and busy industries such as the oil and gas sector, creating some of the busiest dealerships in Canada."

Compared month to month, Saskatchewan's new vehicle sales were up 5.3 per cent (seasonally adjusted) between December 2011 and November 2011, coming in first among the provinces in percentage change.

In December 2011 there were 4,370 units sold in the province (seasonally adjusted). This was more than 460 units more compared to December 2010.
