SASKATCHEWAN EXPORT NUMBERS BEST IN CANADA

Saskatchewan's economy is driven by a strong export market, and figures out today show we lead the nation in growth of international exports.

In March 2008, Saskatchewan's exports totalled $2.2 billion, up 36.3 per cent from last March, and the highest percentage increase in Canada (seasonally unadjusted). For the nation as a whole, international exports fell by 6.4 per cent March over March. Alberta had an increase of 20.4 per cent, with Manitoba experiencing a decrease of 14.2 per cent, and British Columbia dropping by 25.7 per cent.

"While most other provinces are experiencing a decline in exports, Saskatchewan's growing exports are a sign of a strong and vibrant economy," Enterprise and Innovation Minister Lyle Stewart said. "We are definitely encouraged by the fact we are leading the nation when it comes to export growth. It is another sign our economy is moving in the right direction, benefiting Saskatchewan people and businesses."

The first three months have been exceptional for exports, with Saskatchewan recording an increase of 36.4 per cent to $6.3 billion when compared to the first three months of last year. This was also the highest growth rate among the provinces.
