News Release - November 22, 2005 COLLECTING A CENTURY OF MEMORIES FOR THE CENTENNIAL TIME CAPSULE
History will record many of the events, legacy programs and highlights from the centennial year, but people all across Saskatchewan are taking steps to record their own personal memories about the province with 100 years of heart.
"Throughout our centennial year, our pride in this province has soared and that's a feeling worth capturing for future generations to share in and enjoy," Saskatchewan Centennial 2005 Chair and Moose Jaw North MLA Glenn Hagel said. "The Centennial Time Capsule is a great way to create a legacy of our first 100 years as a province and to share our hopes and dreams for what the second century will bring." Hundreds of items have been collected for the time capsule, which is a partnership between Saskatchewan Centennial 2005 and Canadian Western Agribition. "Agribition is honoured to celebrate its 35th anniversary during the province's centennial year and we wanted to make this year even more special by inviting our breeder associations, exhibitors and the people of Saskatchewan to place items into a time capsule that celebrates our memories and milestones," Canadian Western Agribition General Manager Leon Brin said. The initial deadline for submitting items has been extended, based on feedback from community groups throughout the province. With the celebrations going right until December 31st, 2005, many wanted to submit items that were reflective of the entire centennial year. As a result, entries will now be accepted until March 31st, 2006. The goal is to collect 2,005 items that represent Saskatchewan's past, present and future in its centennial year. Items collected to date include the Encyclopedia of Saskatchewan, centennial flags, a replica of a Ford truck, a binder of signatures from people who donated blood as part of the Canadian Blood Services Centennial Challenge, a 100 year-old book from the Shorthorn Association, water and soil samples, community photos, publications and historical DVDs, various pins, cattle magazines and breed publications, school jerseys, essays, poems, photos, handmade crafts and so much more. The Centennial Time Capsule will be sealed in the spring, symbolizing the new growth and opportunities that Saskatchewan will experience during its second century. It will be on display outside of the Canada Centre Building at Regina Exhibition Park until 2020. The time capsule will be opened in 2035, when Agribition celebrates its 50th anniversary. Entries may be submitted to Canadian Western Agribition, Attention Centennial Time Capsule; PO Box 3535, Regina, SK S4P 3J8.
