News Release - April 30, 2009 PROVINCE PROCLAIMS MAY AS MISSING CHILDREN’S MONTHSocial Services Minister Donna Harpauer has proclaimed May as Missing Children's Month in Saskatchewan. This year marks the 18th annual Green Ribbon campaign by Child Find Saskatchewan, which leads up to National Missing Children's Day on May 25. "Our government believes in the protection and safety of our youngest citizens," Harpauer said. "All Saskatchewan residents can play a vital role in helping to raise awareness of missing children by wearing a Green Ribbon of Hope during the month of May." The Green Ribbon is recognized nationally as a symbol to remember missing children and to seek their safe return. It originated at Holy Cross Secondary School in St. Catharines following the abduction and murder of one of their students, Kristen French. In memory of this tragedy, the students and faculty created the Green Ribbon to increase national public awareness for missing children. "Thousands of children in Canada are reported missing each year," Child Find Saskatchewan president Phyllis Hallatt said. "The Green Ribbon is an expression of our thoughts for missing children, their family and friends." Activities carried out during the month of May include fingerprint clinics and community fundraising events. Green Ribbon boxes are placed in various businesses across the province. The proclamation of May as Missing Children's Month demonstrates the Government of Saskatchewan's commitment to protecting children and youth. -30- For more information, contact: Stacey Powell Phyllis Hallatt |
