SASKATCHEWAN PEOPLE REMINDED TO “CONNECT FOR HELP” FOR ADDICTIONS SERVICES

The Ministry of Health is marking Saskatchewan Addictions Awareness Week (SAAW) with a reminder to residents that local addictions services are provided and accessible in every health region.

"We want to increase public awareness about the risk of alcohol and drug use, and promote healthy lifestyles among all Saskatchewan people," Health Minister Dustin Duncan said. "The theme of this year's awareness week is ‘Connect for Help'. We encourage individuals to connect with available addictions services in your local communities if you are concerned about your own substance misuse, or are worried about your loved ones."

Earlier this fall, the Valley Hill Youth Treatment Centre in Prince Albert opened its doors. This 15-bed facility provides a six-week residential treatment program to Saskatchewan youth ages 12 to 17.

In addition, an eight-unit provincial family treatment facility in Prince Albert is anticipated to open early next year. This facility will primarily serve women with addictions who experience difficulty in providing care to their young children. This inpatient program will provide child care on site, making it easier for residents to complete their treatment.

SAAW kicks off today and runs in conjunction with National Addictions Awareness Week. Activities are scheduled in many communities and include workshops, school presentations and displays.
