CELEBRATE MINING WEEK

The province is celebrating the importance of mining during Saskatchewan Mining Week, May 25th-31st.

"Saskatchewan has numerous reasons to be proud of its mining industry because it is key to ensuring a future that is wide open," Industry and Resources Minister Eric Cline said. "Saskatchewan produces about $2.4 billion worth of minerals a year and employs over 17,000 people directly and indirectly."

Mining is Saskatchewan's third largest industry, accounting for about six per cent of the provincial Gross Domestic Product. Mining companies paid on average $240 million in direct mineral royalties and taxes, helping to pay for education, health care and other important social programs across the province.

Saskatchewan ranks third among provinces in mining production, and is home to the world's largest and richest uranium and potash deposits. Our mines account for one-third of global production of each. The province also produces a diversity of minerals including coal, gold, sodium sulphate, copper and zinc. There is also the geological potential for diamonds, rare earth metals and platinum group metals.

The Saskatchewan Mining Association is undertaking a number of activities during Mining Week, under this year's theme "The Economic Impact and Significance of the Mining Industry in Saskatchewan." Activities include newspaper supplements, street banners, presentations to businesses, showcasing regional science fair winners at a launch event at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum in Regina on May 26th, wrapping up with a mine rescue competition and banquet at Regina Exhibition Park on May 31st.
