News Release - June 22, 2001 CONSUMERS WARNED ABOUT PENSION SCHEME
A cease and desist order is being served on National Business Investment In
Trust Inc. by the Saskatchewan Superintendent of Financial Institutions. Saskatchewan Justice has received information that a representative of National Business Investment In Trust Inc. is conducting business in Regina. The company has a scheme that promises owners of locked-in pension plans they can make tax-free withdrawals from their plans. The scheme has been promoted with the claim 'convert your locked-in pension plan into guaranteed money'. The arrangement involves the purchase of shares of a private company. Part of the money used to buy shares is then loaned back to the owner of the pension plan. In Saskatchewan, lenders must be licensed under The Trust and Loans Corporations Act, 1997 to conduct business in the province. National Business Investment In Trust Inc. is not licensed as either a trust, loan or financing corporation in Saskatchewan. Consumers who have already signed contracts with National Business Investment In Trust Inc. risk losing retirement savings and experiencing significant tax consequences and are advised to contact their financial institution to instruct them not to honour the contract.
