PUBLIC REVIEW OF NEW ENVIRONMENTAL CODE COMPLETE

A recently-completed public review of the draft Saskatchewan Environmental Code shows that support for a results-based approach to environmental regulation is strong. The code, the first of its kind in Canada, will set clear expectations about the environmental results that industry and communities must achieve, while providing greater flexibility around exactly how they get there.

During the review, more than 800 people attended 20 meetings. The Ministry of Environment also received more than 80 written comments on various aspects of the code.

"The response during the public review was positive," Environment Minister Dustin Duncan said. "We heard from many people with many different viewpoints. While there was general support for the code and the results-based approach, many valuable suggestions were made and we are working to address them."

The comments on the first 19 code chapters have been compiled and will be considered by the Code Development Committee, a 19-member advisory group representing a broad range of backgrounds and interests. The committee plans to submit its final recommendation regarding the first edition of the code to the minister this summer.

"I am extremely pleased with the level of interest and contributions from experts and interested parties to the development of the Saskatchewan Environmental Code," Duncan said. "The code's development has been driven by an unprecedented level of stakeholder involvement and leadership, including the time and expertise of more than 200 experts and industry leaders from companies, associations, government agencies, environmental organizations, municipalities, First Nations and Métis communities, academia and private individuals."

When the first phase of the code is completed later this year, the associated acts and regulations can be proclaimed. New chapters will continue to be developed. Work has already begun on code chapters to regulate work in or near water, and linear activities, such as roads, utility lines and seismic lines.

More information on the code can be obtained from the ministry's website at http://www.environment.gov.sk.ca/Regulations or email the Code Secretariat at codesecretariat@gov.sk.ca.
