News Release - July 30, 2008 UKRAINIAN EXCHANGE STUDENTS VISIT THE LEGISLATUREEducation Minister Ken Krawetz today met with Ukrainian high school students during their visit to the province's legislative building. The students from Chernivtsi Oblast are participating in an exchange program with high school students from Saskatoon. "With 12 per cent of Saskatchewan's population being of Ukrainian heritage, exchange programs provide important opportunities to increase understanding and knowledge of both countries," Krawetz said. "It was my pleasure to discuss Saskatchewan politics and, in particular, people of Ukrainian descent who have made significant contributions to the province." The students from Ukraine, along with an official from Chernivtsi Oblast Ministry of Education and Sciences and the student's high school principal, are visiting the province from July 28 to August 19. The Saskatoon students who are participating in the exchange were in Chernivtsi for two weeks this spring. Since an agreement in 1977 by the University of Saskatchewan and the Chernivtsi State University, numerous additional education and government agreements have encouraged increased collaboration between Ukraine and Saskatchewan. Exchanges between post-secondary and high school students, civil servants, as well as collaboration on projects such as curriculum development, health system management, farm management and improvements for power utilities in Ukraine are just a few examples. -30- For more information, contact: Jacquie McLean Related Documents
