PROVINCE INVESTS IN ON-RESERVE TRAINING

Saskatchewan is investing nearly $160,000 in North West Regional College (NWRC) to provide on-reserve skills training programs to First Nations learners.

"Our government wants to ensure that the people in Saskatchewan benefit from continued growth and the strong and steady economy," Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Minister Rob Norris said. "By investing in Saskatchewan's First Nations learners, we are reducing barriers to employment, preparing for future labour market demands and building a secure and prosperous future for all residents."

"Our government believes it is valuable, whenever possible, to bring training right to the people," Minister of First Nations and Métis Relations June Draude said. "This way, the young and growing population of First Nations workers will have an opportunity to remain near their homes while they train for these important jobs that will enhance communities across the province."

NWRC will receive provincial funding of more than $100,000 to provide a Welding Applied Certificate training program at Thunderchild First Nation and more than $50,000 to provide a Continuing Care Assistant (CCA) training program at Big River First Nation. Other contributions for the delivery of the program will also come from the respective Bands.

"North West Regional College is pleased to be able to serve all of our communities, including First Nations communities," NWRC Chief Executive Officer Bryan Nylander said.

"The key to mobilizing the aboriginal work force is through relevant education and training opportunities," Thunderchild First Nation Chief Dale Awasis said.

The on-reserve training began in February 2009, with 10 students enrolled in welding training and 14 students enrolled in the CCA training.
