In recognition of the importance of Saskatchewan's recreation, leisure services and parks delivery system, the Government of Saskatchewan has once again proclaimed June as "Recreation and Parks Month in Saskatchewan!"

Each June, recreation services and parks throughout the country to celebrate the return of summer programming, to gather communities together, recognize volunteers, get residents involved in fun outdoor physical activities and support the parks and recreation sector.

"This month is a great opportunity to recognize the contributions leisure services and parks provide to our communities and visitors from around the world," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Christine Tell said. "Recreation and parks programming builds social capital, strengthens volunteer and community development and promotes cultural diversity."

The Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association (S.P.R.A.), brought June is Recreation and Parks Month Celebrations to Saskatchewan in 2005. As a national advocacy initiative, the intent is been to draw attention to the benefits associated with participation in recreational activity and recognize the organizations, staff and volunteers who make such opportunities available.

"Participating in recreation and parks opportunities fosters healthy individuals, families and communities," Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association president Randy Kinnee said. "We encourage everyone in Saskatchewan to experience the many benefits recreation and parks have to offer by celebrating recreation and parks in June and everyday of the year! S.P.R.A. invites all Saskatchewan communities to join us in celebrating the quality recreation programs, parks and facilities we have in the province, through June is Recreation and Parks Month initiative."

The official launch of Recreation and Parks Month will be held June 1, 2008, during the annual Innovation Credit Union Picnic in the Park, in Swift Current. The public is invited to take part in the day's events and experience food at old-fashioned prices, musical entertainment by local talent, games and face painting for the kids and much more!
