CORPORAL PUNISHMENT PROHIBITED IN SASKATCHEWAN PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Learning Minister Andrew Thomson today announced an amendment to The Education Act to prohibit corporal punishment in public schools.

"While the use of corporal punishment in public schools is not a form of discipline that is currently being used," Thomson said, "this change to The Education Act reinforces non-violent behaviour. Saskatchewan now joins six other provinces that currently prohibit corporal punishment in schools."

While the legislation prohibits corporal punishment, it does not prohibit actions that may be necessary to maintain order in the school, prevent injury to students or prevent damage to property.

"Since 1996, Saskatchewan's Children's Advocate has recommended that The Education Act be amended in this regard," Acting Children's Advocate Glenda Cooney said. "We are pleased that the government has made this positive step to show, in legislation, how as a province we value our children."
