News Release - March 15, 2006 PROJECT HOPE ENHANCES SAFER COMMUNITIES INVESTIGATIONS
Saskatchewan Justice has added two investigators to its Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Investigation (SCAN) Unit with funds from the Premier's Project Hope.
"It only takes one house where someone is selling, producing or using illegal drugs to compromise the safety of an entire neighbourhood," Justice Minister Frank Quennell said. "The Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Investigation Unit targets these properties, and if necessary, will shut them down." "One of the commitments we made in the Premier's Project Hope was reducing drug supplies," Healthy Living Services Minster Graham Addley said. "With the hiring of SCAN officers, another Project Hope commitment has been met." The Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act, is targeted to residential and commercial buildings that are used for unlawful activities such as producing, selling or using illegal drugs, prostitution, solvent abuse, providing aid to gang members or the unlawful sale and consumption of alcohol. The legislation significantly assists law enforcement officers in fighting organized crime and the illegal activities associated with it. Project Hope funds also supported a fall campaign to ensure residents of Regina and Saskatoon are aware of the program. A province-wide campaign is planned this spring. If you suspect that a property in your neighbourhood is being used to sell drugs, call toll free at 1-866-51-SAFER. Your report is confidential. -30- For More Information, Contact:
