PROVINCE INCREASES FUNDING TO FOSTER FAMILIES ASSOCIATION

The Government of Saskatchewan has increased its annual funding to the Saskatchewan Foster Families Association to a record level as part of its ongoing commitment to strengthen the child welfare system in the province.

The Ministry of Social Services will provide $341,000 in addition to its annual operating grant of $526,000, bringing total funding to the SFFA for this year to nearly $867,000 - the largest grant ever provided by the province to the organization.

"The Saskatchewan Foster Families Association and the foster families it represents are among our government's most valued and important partners," Social Services Minister Donna Harpauer said. "Their work is absolutely vital in ensuring that vulnerable children receive safe, quality care."

The funding has assisted the SFFA with their move to new office space, allowing room for additional staff, training facilities and a resource centre. It also provides funding that will allow the SFFA to continue to pilot two projects initiated last year, a 1-800 number for potential foster parents to call for more information, and a new position dedicated to recruiting First Nations and Métis foster families. In addition, $150,000 has been earmarked for promotional activities being developed jointly with Social Services.

"Our organization is very pleased to be working closely with the Ministry of Social Services to help address the challenges in the province's child welfare system," Saskatchewan Foster Families Association Executive Director Deb Davies said. "This increased level of funding is greatly appreciated, and will enable us to continue to support our existing foster parents and to focus on recruiting new foster families."

"We look forward to a continued successful partnership with the SFFA as we work towards our common goal of ensuring a better life for Saskatchewan children," Harpauer said.
