News Release - March 13, 2008 GOVERNMENT CREATES NEW BUSINESS OPPORTUNITYThe government is changing Saskatchewan's liquor regulations to allow businesses to offer "U-brew" and "U-vin" services to customers. Minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA) Dan D'Autremont said customers will be able to go to their local wine/beer kit business and make and bottle products on-site, rather than doing so in their home. "Not everyone has the knowledge, space or expertise to make wine and beer at home," D'Autremont said. "Allowing businesses that already sell home wine and beer kits to expand into ‘U-brew' and ‘U-vin' operations is a natural expansion." Eligible businesses receiving a permit from SLGA will be able to offer supplies, space, equipment and expertise to customers who want to make their own beer or wine on-site. Customers will be required to participate in the production of the product. Wascana Wine and Brew co-owner Christopher Hay said "U-brew" and "U-vin" services are something customers have been asking for. "By modernizing Saskatchewan's liquor laws, government is helping to create new business opportunities in the province," Hay said. "I'm pleased that government is listening to the concerns of small business." "U-brew" and "U-vin" permits will be issued once the necessary regulatory framework is established and legislative amendments are passed, something that is expected to occur during the fall legislative session. SLGA will consult with industry to develop regulations that will allow these businesses to provide this new service to customers. "Our government recognizes that small business is the backbone of a vibrant and growing economy," D'Autremont said. "This announcement today is a reflection of the growing marketplace in Saskatchewan." -30- For more information, contact: David Morris |
