Opportunities for young people, benefits for families, action on environmental protection and improved public health care will top the government’s agenda when the spring session of the legislature begins on Wednesday, March 7, 2007.

One of the centrepieces of the session will be the provincial budget, set for Thursday, March 22, 2007.

“In this session, and in the upcoming budget, we will continue to ensure Saskatchewan people receive the benefits of our booming economy,” Premier Lorne Calvert said.  “We will also take significant steps to advance our green agenda to protect our clean air, water and land, which is vital to our quality of life while tapping into the opportunities presented by a green economy.

“Saskatchewan’s job market, business opportunities and economic performance have never been better.  We will continue to invest in training, our transportation network and our communities so that people can take full advantage of our strong and diverse economy.  We will continue to invest in vital services such as health, housing and education to make life better for Saskatchewan families.”

Building on the four cornerstones outlined in the Throne Speech, the government will take significant steps toward the long-term commitment to have one-third of energy requirements come from renewable resources.

“Climate change presents an enormous challenge to the entire planet,” Calvert said.  “For our families to remain healthy and our economy to prosper, we owe it to our children to confront climate change while ensuring a reliable supply of affordable energy for Saskatchewan homes, industries and communities.

“The fall sitting focused on legislation that created a new Family Day holiday and reduced the PST by two per cent.  As we begin the Session this spring, our focus will be on the budget, to support Saskatchewan families and continue making Saskatchewan a great place for young people to build their futures.  The government is leading change to make life better for families and young people.”
