DR. LLOYD BARBER – A LIFETIME OF PUBLIC SERVICE

Advanced Education, Employment and Immigration Minister Rob Norris paid tribute to former University of Regina President Dr. Lloyd Barber who died Friday, September 16, 2011 at the age of 79.

"Dr. Barber was a strong and charismatic leader who championed the University of Regina's early development and whose outstanding contributions to higher education have had an enduring impact on the university," Norris said. "Under his inspired leadership, the university's reputation grew across Canada with major achievements in aboriginal education and partnerships with international institutions."

Dr. Barber served as president and vice-chancellor of the University of Regina from 1976 until his retirement in 1990, was Indian Claims Commissioner for Canada and a board member of several major corporations.

He has received many provincial and national honours, including:

• Officer of the Order of Canada;
• Aboriginal Order of Canada;
• Vanier Medal of the Institute of Public Administration of Canada;
• Companion of the Order of Canada;
• Saskatchewan Order of Merit; and
• Honorary Degree from the University of Regina.

"Dr. Barber's story is a lifetime of public service and achievement," Norris said. "He has made a difference in the life of Saskatchewan and will be long remembered."
