News Release - June 30, 2005 REGINA YOUTH RECOGNIZED FOR CREATIVE WORK
Three Regina youth have received awards in a unique Saskatchewan Centennial contest.
Information Services Corporation of Saskatchewan (ISC) has presented Melinda Booy, a student with the Regina Christian School with a $200 award for her short story titled, Circle of Bones, which vividly describes the experiences of a young Metis girl during the Battle of Batoche. ISC has presented Julie Slobodzian, a student at Michael A. Riffel High School, with a $200 award for her essay, titled, The Qu'Appelle Valley and its development, which describes the rich and romantic history of the Qu'Appelle Valley. As well ISC has presented Noel Deckert, a student with Cochrane High School with a $200 award for his essay titled, Regina's Tornado 1912, which describes the terrifying day in 1912 that a Tornado roared through Regina, killing 28 people, injuring hundreds and leaving thousands homless. As part of celebrating Saskatchewan's Centennial year, ISC is encouraging youth participation in Centennial events and is providing a scholarship to one Grade 12 student in each of 20 schools that volunteered to be part of the program. The initiative asked students to write an essay under the broad topic of the land in Saskatchewan. Essays can cover any number of subjects or aspects – open to the creativity of the author - ranging from a family homestead, an interesting landmark, a location where an historic event took place, or any other subject connected to the land in our province. The program fosters the creativity of students and builds an enhanced awareness of Saskatchewan. The contest targeted students in and around communities in which ISC's Customer Service Centres are located. Information Services Corporation of Saskatchewan is the provincial crown corporation responsible for the administration of provincial land titles, surveys, mapping and geographic information services as well as the personal property registry. The province's land titles registry, now an arm of ISC, has been involved in granting and titling land in Saskatchewan since 1886. All winning essays in ISC's Grade 12 Centennial Essay contests will be posted to a special ISC Centennial website at www.centennial.isc.ca. -30- For More Information, Contact:
