News Release - November 17, 2008 PREMIER APPOINTS HUYGHEBAERT AS ARMED FORCES LIAISONWall Says MLA's Military Experience Makes Him Ideal Person For This Job "With his distinguished career in uniform and immense experience working with regular forces, reservists and cadets, Yogi is the ideal person for the job," Wall said. "One of the first things I've asked him to do is work on the scholarship we outlined in the Speech from the Throne to honour returning soldiers as well as the sons and daughters of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. I know he will do a great job on this and anything else related to our government's relationship with the Canadian Armed Forces." Huyghebaert will be the government's main contact with the Department of National Defence and Canadian Forces in Saskatchewan in dealing with matters such as:
Prior to entering politics, Huyghebaert had a long and distinguished military career. He is best known in Canada for the time he served in command of the Snowbirds Demonstration Squadron. Huyghebaert enrolled in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1961, and received his wings in 1968. His career included postings in Germany and as a special consultant at the Canadian Embassy in Washington D.C. In 1987, Her Excellency, Governor General Jean Sauvé invested Huyghebaert in the Order of Military Merit for exceptional service with the Canadian Forces. "I'm honoured to accept this position and look forward to my new responsibilities," Huyghebaert said. Saskatchewan is one of three Canadian provinces with similar positions.
