NEW K-12 TREATY EDUCATION WEBSITE

The First Nations and Métis Education Promising Practices Symposium today in Saskatoon provided an opportunity for Saskatchewan's Ministry of Education to highlight the new K - 12 Treaty Education website.

"One of our most recent best practices is the development of a new K - 12 Treaty Education website www.k-12treatyeducation.gov.sk.ca that features curriculum links, support resources, historical information, treaty area maps and more," Deputy Premier and Education Minister Ken Krawetz said. "Our government is committed to ensuring that instruction in the history and content of the treaties is mandatory in the provincial K - 12 system."

The Promising Practices Symposium is being co-hosted by the Ministry of Education and the Canadian Council on Learning (CCL): Aboriginal Learning Centre. Participants will share First Nations and Métis education practices both provincially and nationally.

"This symposium and the K - 12 Treaty Education website provide creative ways that build on our successes with regard to Aboriginal education," First Nations and Métis Relations Minister June Draude said. "It is through initiatives such as these that will help shape brighter educational futures for all Saskatchewan children."

"We are pleased to co-host this symposium," Krawetz said. "We honour the strong relationships forged with Elders, First Nations and Métis education authorities, school divisions, organizations such as CCL and the Office of the Treaty Commissioner that focus on improved outcomes for all students. Together we continue to work toward common goals such as improving student achievement, graduation rates and ensuring smooth career transitions for all students."

The First Nations and Métis Education Promising Practices Symposium is being held April 1 and 2 at the Radisson Hotel in Saskatoon.

"This symposium is timely as Saskatchewan recently hosted the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC) Summit on Aboriginal Education," Krawetz said. "Both of these events provide the opportunity for dialogue and information sharing with a focus on building relationships and discussing strategies to eliminate student achievement gaps between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal learners."
