TWINNING CONSTRUCTION COMPLETE ON HIGHWAY 1 EAST

Construction on Highway 1 east resulted in 40 km of new twinned lanes opened to the driving public and another 25 km of new lanes graded in preparation for paving, as the 2004 construction season came to a close in Saskatchewan.

"The people of Saskatchewan have told us that twinning the province's portion of the Trans Canada is important to them," Highways and Transportation Minister Maynard Sonntag said. "We are committed to meeting the public's expectations, getting people and goods where they need to go efficiently and safely."

Saskatchewan motorists can drive another 40 km of divided highway between Wolseley and Broadview. Grading work on the new lanes began in the 2003 construction season. In the 2004 construction season, grading continued and paving began from east of Wolseley to west of Broadview. Paving was completed in late September.

Grading on an adjacent 25 km of new lanes from west of Broadview to west of Whitewood wrapped up in late October, as did construction on the CPR overpass bridge sub-structures (piles, piers and abutments) at Broadview. These projects were completed in preparation for paving in 2005.

The total construction cost for twinning on Highway 1 East this year was $26.7 million. This work was cost-shared with the federal government through the Canada Strategic Infrastructure Fund (CSIF) and the Strategic Highway Infrastructure Program (SHIP). The province provided $14.4 million in funding while the federal contribution was $12.3 million.

"Highway 1 serves as an essential trade corridor and tourism link to the rest of Canada as part of the National Highway System," Sonntag said. "I look forward to the completion of twinning on Highway 1 to the Manitoba border by 2007."
