PROVINCE TO DISTRIBUTE $1.2 MILLION FOR MOSQUITO CONTROL

Saskatchewan municipalities are being invited to submit proposals for mosquito control funding as part of the province's $1.2 million West Nile Virus program.

In addition to the $1.2 million in mosquito control funding, the province is spending $250,000 for enhanced surveillance and hiring an entomologist to serve as a West Nile Virus co-ordinator at Saskatchewan Health. There will also be $40,000 for continued public education on personal protection and prevention measures, as these measures are a very effective way to reduce the incidence of West Nile Virus.

Saskatchewan Health is sending letters today to representatives of municipal and Aboriginal organizations outlining the funding formula and the process for submitting proposals.

The 50/50 cost-shared funding will support enhanced efforts to control the spread of West Nile Virus. The virus was identified in a number of birds and horses in 2002, and is expected to return to Saskatchewan this summer.

"Our government is committed to protecting public health," Health Minister John Nilson said. "While we cannot eliminate the threat of West Nile Virus, we want to reduce the risk by working together with communities in delivering mosquito control programs."

One million dollars will be allocated to urban and rural communities on a per capita basis, with the province matching funds for approved mosquito control activities. Mosquito control activities may include staff training, larvaciding, purchase of equipment and supplies, mapping of breeding sites, operation of mosquito traps, public education and monitoring of programs.

Smaller communities of less than 2,000 residents are being asked to work on joint proposals in partnership with neighbouring communities. The cost-shared funding will also be available for mosquito control activities on First Nations reserves in Saskatchewan.

The remaining $200,000 will be held in a contingency fund for control of adult mosquitoes in areas where there is a high risk of West Nile Virus disease in humans.

Saskatchewan Health will provide further information about West Nile Virus surveillance and public education plans in early May.
