News Release - June 5, 2008 AGRIUM CONVICTED OF OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY VIOLATIONAgrium Inc. of Calgary, Alberta was fined $234,000 in Saskatoon Provincial Court yesterday, after violating occupational health and safety legislation that could have prevented a workplace accident. The charges follow an incident on August 31, 2006, when an Agrium Inc. employee was injured by falling rock at an underground potash mine near Vanscoy, Saskatchewan. Agrium Inc. pled guilty of failing to ensure the health, safety and welfare of its worker as required by The Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993. The Ministry of Justice and Attorney General laid charges against Agrium Inc. for contributing to the injuries of the worker. The Occupational Health and Safety Division inspects approximately 4,000 workplaces annually and provides training to more than 4,000 employer and worker representatives each year on their safety responsibilities. -30- For more information, contact: Donna-Rae Crooks |
