STRONG YEAR SO FAR FOR EXPORTS

The new totals for merchandise exports are in for October which show Saskatchewan had a 10.1 per cent increase in the first 10 months of the year compared to the same period of last year, ranking second among the provinces.

"In 2012, we've seen a steady upward trend for exports," Economy Minister Bill Boyd said. "It's an important economic indicator to note as trade is necessary to sustain our positive growth levels."

Merchandise exports totalled $26.4 billion in the same period of 2012, up from $24.0 billion in 2011.

Major increases were reported in farm, fish and food products, up by 21.5 per cent, energy products, up by 19.8 per cent, metal and non-metallic products, up by 30.4 per cent and forestry products up by 39.0 per cent.

"One of the foundations of Saskatchewan's recent economic plan is to build on the solid reputation of our export industry," Boyd said. "This is an attainable goal and we will continue efforts to engage international markets which will in turn increase trade and continue growth of exports from our province."
