NORTHERN STUDENTS VISIT THE CAPITAL CITY TO LEARN ABOUT GOVERNMENT

A group of 19 northern high school students are travelling to Regina this weekend to participate in the Youth Mentorship Program and learn about Saskatchewan's provincial government, its history and heritage.

"This program offers Saskatchewan students a unique opportunity to explore our capital, meet with representatives from the provincial government and the public service and get a first-hand look at democracy in action," Minister responsible for the Provincial Capital Commission Bill Hutchinson said.

The program, which runs from May 8 to 11, also provides students with information on careers in government and the Saskatchewan public service as well as an opportunity to learn about the history of our province.

"I would like to thank our partners Cameco Corporation and the Government House Foundation for their support of the Youth Mentorship Program that is such a great educational opportunity for our province's youth," Hutchinson said.

The students will tour the University of Regina, Government House, the RCMP Depot Division and the Legislative Building where they will attend Question Period. While in Regina they will meet with the Lieutenant Governor, the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Members of the Legislative Assembly and government officials to get an inside perspective of government and the legislative process.

This year's participants are from Rhoda Hardlotte Memorial Keethanow High School in Stanley Mission, Minahik Waskahigan School in Pinehouse Lake, Birch Narrows Dene Community School in Turnor Lake and Father Gamache Memorial School in Fond du Lac.
