News Release - March 31, 2003 NEW FIRE AND FOREST INSECT AND DISEASE POLICY FRAMEWORK
After extensive public consultation, Saskatchewan has a new policy framework for managing wild land fire and forest insects and diseases.
"The new policy framework envisions the wise use of fire suppression resources to protect the values Saskatchewan people and, at the same time, ensure that fire can play its natural role in the renewal of ecosystems," Environment Minister Buckley Belanger said. Other key elements of the new policy framework include encouraging property owners and communities to reduce the danger of wildfire and ensuring that forest insect and disease management is fully integrated within land use and resource management plans. Protecting human life and safety is the department's highest priority. When fire protection resources are overburdened however, decisions between which other values to protect may need to be made. An integrated approach will be developed by fire managers to prioritize the economic, social, cultural and ecological values based on how the public ranks these values in each area. Belanger urged anyone wishing to learn more about the new policy framework, how it may affect them and how to reduce wildfire risks, to contact the nearest Saskatchewan Environment forest protection office. "Fifty per cent of all wild land fires started last year were human caused so we all need to remember to be careful with fire," Belanger said. -30- For More Information, Contact:
