News Release - October 29, 2009 NEW SASKATCHEWAN HOUSING CORPORATION BOARD ANNOUNCEDThe Government of Saskatchewan has acted on another recommendation of the Task Force on Housing Affordability that will enhance the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation's governance through the appointment of an expanded, more representative Board of Directors. "Saskatchewan Housing Corporation's new Board of Directors will chart new directions for the corporation to address housing needs across the province," Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Donna Harpauer said. "It will further our government's commitment to accountability and transparency, and is a significant step forward in improving co-ordination between government and the communities it serves." "Access to appropriate housing is essential for the well being of everyone in Saskatchewan, and to support growth in our province," Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Chairperson Keith Hanson said. "With a mandate to provide appropriate housing options for all Saskatchewan residents, we look forward to overcoming the challenges ahead. All members of the board are knowledgeable and experienced in the provision of communities and homes. We are committed to evaluating the housing needs across the province and delivering on our mandate." The new board has met in Saskatoon and Regina in its first two months of full operations. The initial focus of the board has been to establish a strategic direction for the corporation and oversee its financial affairs. The new board consists of eight members representing a broad spectrum of housing industry stakeholders and the public interest:
The Task Force on Housing Affordability, established in March 2008 by Harpauer, examined and provided recommendations for improving housing affordability, increasing housing capacity and ensuring long-term monitoring of affordable housing in Saskatchewan. In May 2009, the province passed Bill No. 63, An Act to Amend the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Act, to change the governance structure of Saskatchewan Housing Corporation to a Board made up of representative housing stakeholders. -30- For more information, contact:
