News Release - July 27, 2005 PROFITS CONTINUE TO CLIMB AT THE SASKATCHEWAN GAMING CORPORATION
The Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation (SGC), which operates Casinos Regina and Moose Jaw, continued to ensure a high level of sustainable profitability by posting a net income of $39.4 million over the 2004-2005 fiscal year – an increase of $2.9 million over the previous year.
"The Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation continues to play a vital role in the local and provincial economy," Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation President and CEO Marty Klyne said. "The Corporation has had a successful nine years of growth every year since its opening." The net revenues for the Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation increased by 7.4 per cent to $97.7 million in 2004-2005. This included an increase in slot revenues to $5.1 million while table revenue did not experience a change from the prior year. More than two million people visited Casino Regina in 2004-2005, up by nearly 150,000 from the previous year and attendance at Casino Moose Jaw continued to rise to 564,000. "Our two properties have earned strong reputations in the areas of entertainment and customer service and in accelerating the participation rate of Aboriginal people in Saskatchewan's economy," Klyne said. SGC also posted its first quarter results today for the period April 1st to June 30th, 2005 compared to the same period last year. As a result of the implementation of the smoking ban, net income was down 32.8 per cent or $3.6 million, and revenues decreased by 5.9 per cent. To counter the impact of the smoking ban, SGC increased its marketing activities and in anticipation of increased attendance, SGC stepped up its staffing levels. The increases in marketing and additional staff resulted in a 13.9 per cent increase in expenses. All of SGC's profits are delivered to the province's General Revenue Fund: 25 per cent is then distributed to non-profit, community organizations and the Métis Development Fund; 25 per cent is allocated to the First Nations Trust Fund; and the remaining 50 per cent is distributed to important provincial programs for the overall benefit of Saskatchewan's communities. The total workforce for Casinos Regina and Moose Jaw is 797 employees. Métis and First Nations employees represent 50 per cent of the total workforce.
