News Release - June 14, 2004 CELEBRATE UNITED EMPIRE LOYALISTS DAY
The province is celebrating United Empire Loyalists Day on June 19th.
More than 200 years ago, the American Revolution resulted in about 70,000 American colonists loyal to the Crown fleeing their homes and resettling in Canada. Many of them were among the first to settle out west. "The Loyalists helped shape our country's heritage and distinctive national identity," Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Joan Beatty said. "United Empire Loyalist Day is an opportunity to reflect on the tradition of the Loyalists and the resources and achievements they have brought to our land." Regina's branch of the United Empire Loyalists Association plans to erect a cairn on the west end of the Legislative grounds. The cairn will consist of fieldstones from the homesteads of Loyalist pioneers and is dedicated to the lasting memory of Loyalists. The commemorative cairn is to be in place for Saskatchewan's Centennial in 2005. -30- For More Information, Contact:
