PROVINCE AND HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HELP TWO LLOYDMINSTER FAMILIES ACHIEVE HOMEOWNERSHIP

Two Habitat for Humanity Lloydminster partner families have become homeowners, thanks to a total of $100,000 in funding assistance from the province through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation. The families will be presented with keys to their new homes at a special ceremony to be held today.

"Helping Saskatchewan families achieve their dreams of homeownership is a goal that our government shares with Habitat for Humanity," Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude said. "We all must work together to ensure that everyone benefits from our economic prosperity and growth. Much work still lies ahead, but we will continue to do our part to help Saskatchewan families improve their lives through safe, quality housing."

"Habitat for Humanity ‘On the Border' is extremely appreciative of the support from the Government of Saskatchewan," Habitat Board Chair Rowena Epp said. "Together we have now helped seven families in Lloydminster achieve the dream of homeownership. Our local philosophy is ‘full circle building,' which champions not simply building homes but also building communities. Through partnerships such as the one we have with the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation and the incredible support we have from our community, we will continue to improve the quality of life of families in Lloydminster one door at a time."

Since 2009, the province has dedicated $3.5 million in funding for Habitat for Humanity affiliates and chapters in Regina, Moose Jaw, Saskatoon, Yorkton, Prince Albert and Lloydminster to help build a total of 70 homes across the province. To date, the government has committed more than $2 million of the $3.5 million in grant funding available to Saskatchewan Habitat for Humanity affiliates to develop 46 homes.

With the cost of building new homes increasing significantly, Habitat is one of the few organizations whose distinct delivery model continues to provide viable homeownership opportunities for low- to moderate-income families. Each selected Habitat partner family contributes 500 hours of sweat equity to build their home and other Habitat for Humanity homes, and participates in valuable training and preparation sessions. In return, their lives are transformed by the positive experience of working with the Habitat for Humanity community and by the many benefits that come along with homeownership.
