GOVERNMENT SUPPORT FOR WEST FLAT COMMUNITY PRESCHOOL

The West Flat Community Preschool will receive $148,000 in support from the provincial government.

"We want our children to get the best start in life," Prince Albert Northcote MLA Eldon Lautermilch said on behalf of Learning Minister Deb Higgins. "My government recognizes the importance of early learning opportunities for children and families in communities across Saskatchewan. That is why we are pleased to support the preschool in the West Flat community."

Preschools improve health, social skills and potential for success in school, particularly among at risk children. The programs emphasize basic social skills and intellectual development, along with parental involvement, education and support. Medical care such as immunizations, dental checkups and nutrition are also part of the program.

The West Flat Community Preschool operates two programs, one in the morning and one in the afternoon from Monday to Thursday. It serves 90 preschool children from the West Flat area.

"West Flat is a vibrant community in our city. The supports offered to parents and children at the preschool will help these children and families participate more successfully in the life of their community," Lautermilch said.

Saskatchewan's plan for early learning and child care is to develop an integrated system that focuses on early childhood development and positive outcomes for children. The plan was developed based on research and following extensive consultation with stakeholders.

"My government is working to implement our Early Learning and Child Care Strategy with provincial resources," Lautermilch said. "This year we increased our commitment to Early Learning and Child Care by 37 per cent or $11.6 million. This is all part of our goal to make Saskatchewan the best place for families to live, work and build strong futures."
