PROVINCE ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR LEGISLATIVE BUILDING’S 100TH ANNIVERSARY

Minister responsible for the Provincial Capital Commission Bill Hutchinson joined Lieutenant Governor Dr. Gordon Barnhart and Speaker Don Toth to announce plans today for the 100th Anniversary of the Saskatchewan Legislative Building in 2012.

"This site is more than just a building, it represents the hopes, dreams, values and ideals that the people of our great province share," Hutchinson said. "For almost a century it has served as a centre for lively debate and discussion, as well a place to witness democracy in action. Its construction was truly the building of the Saskatchewan dream."

The public is encouraged to share their stories, memories and photos of the Saskatchewan Legislative Building, to become a part of the official celebration.

"The stories of our citizens and their experiences here are an important part of this building's history," Hutchinson said. "Whether it is a story about a first visit, or time spent working in the building or even on the construction of the building, these are the stories that we want to leave as part of our legacy for the next 100 years."

The celebration will include several events beginning with the kick-off in spring 2012 when the time capsule that was placed in the building's cornerstone 100 years ago will be opened and its contents revealed.

Throughout the year new educational, visitor and art programs will be implemented along with new displays and exhibits. A legacy program will also be launched. A final public event will be held on October 11, 2012, to commemorate the opening of the Legislative Building on October 12, 1912.
