SASKATCHEWAN PUBLIC HEALTH OFFICIALS INVESTIGATE RE-USE OF SYRINGES IN THE PROVINCE

The Ministry of Health and regional health authorities are currently investigating to determine whether reuse of syringes to inject medication into intravenous lines is occurring in Saskatchewan.

The ministry is issuing a precautionary alert advising regional health authorities that, in all circumstances (including administration of medication to intravenous lines), regions ensure that syringes are used for only one patient and then discarded after use. Based on preliminary information, the ministry is aware the practice has happened in one health region.

"Saskatchewan is committed to ensuring safe health care is provided to all Saskatchewan residents," Saskatchewan Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Moira McKinnon said. "The actual risk of acquiring an infection in this manner is exceptionally low."

Dr. McKinnon is working with medical health officers from all health regions to conduct a detailed investigation into this matter and to ensure the best infection-control procedures and processes are in place throughout the province.
