PROVINCE RECOGNIZES NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL HONOURS RECIPIENTS

Eighteen Saskatchewan citizens were recognized today for receiving national and international honours at a ceremony at Government House.

"These recipients have made extraordinary contributions to people in Saskatchewan and beyond," Lieutenant Governor Lynda Haverstock said. "They prove that individuals do, indeed, possess the power to improve the world, and it is most fitting that we celebrate their remarkable achievements and generosity."

The honourees have received the Order of Canada, the Order of Merit of the Police Forces, the Medal of Special Civic Merits from Albania, the Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog from Denmark, the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Palmes académiques from France, or the Royal Order of the Polar Star from Sweden.

"Those being recognized today exemplify the courage and selfless spirit that built Saskatchewan into a wonderful province and have contributed to its international relations today," Premier Lorne Calvert said.

The Canadian honours system dates from 1967 when the Order of Canada was established. The Order of Military Merit and the civilian Decorations for Bravery were added in 1972. There are now a wide variety of orders, decorations and medals.

Saskatchewan's recognition of national honours has been held since 1985.
