PREMIER SAYS SPRING SESSION WILL FOCUS ON KEEPING ECONOMY STRONG

Premier Brad Wall today said the spring session of the Legislature, which begins Monday, will focus on keeping Saskatchewan's economy strong.

"The economy is now the number one issue with Saskatchewan people," Wall said. "While our province is not immune from the economic storm, Saskatchewan continues to have the strongest economy in Canada and our government is taking steps to keep it that way.

"Last fall, we introduced the largest income tax reduction in Saskatchewan history, which will put more than $600 million back in the hands of Saskatchewan people this year. Earlier this month, we announced our ‘economic booster shot' - $500 million to build and repair schools, nursing homes, housing, highways and municipal infrastructure in every corner of the province."

Wall said the upcoming provincial budget will build on those economic initiatives.

"This budget will be designed to keep Saskatchewan's economy strong and steady in the face of the current economic storm," Wall said. "We will outline another billion dollars worth of much-needed infrastructure spending. And unlike most other governments in Canada this year, we will deliver a balanced budget."

Wall said he expects the government and opposition to deal with many other important issues during the session, including agriculture, health and education.

"I expect that one of the highlights for me will be the introduction of a new military scholarship for the children of military members who made the ultimate sacrifice," Wall said. "I know this is but a small repayment of a debt we can never fully repay, but I think Saskatchewan people will feel good to know that our province is taking this step to say thank you and ensure these children's futures."
