SASKJOBS CONTINUES TO SHATTER RECORDS

Two million visits in first 107 days of 2009

The Government of Saskatchewan's job-matching website, www.saskjobs.ca has become a beacon for job seekers in challenging economic times.

Today, just 107 days into 2009, Saskjobs.ca reached the two million visitor mark. This compares to 170 days last year and 221 days in 2007.

"This surge in popularity shows us that job seekers from across Canada and around the world are looking to Saskatchewan as a place of opportunity," Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Minister Rob Norris said. "While we are not immune to the effects of the global economic downturn, Saskatchewan's economy remains strong and steady compared to other jurisdictions."

The site's popularity saw an increase in the fall of 2008, following the province's participation in the September National Job Fair. That mission has resulted in more than 100 Ontario families moving to Saskatchewan. A second mission earlier this month resulted in an additional surge of visits - including a record of 159,327 visits to the website for the week ending April 4, 2009. The spring mission also featured a record 13,500 attendees at the National Job Fair.

So far this year, Saskjobs.ca has hosted more than 465,000 visits from outside Saskatchewan, including more than 160,000 from Ontario and more than 90,000 from outside Canada.

"While we are pleased that many people are looking to Saskatchewan for opportunity, we are also mindful of those within our borders who have been adversely affected by changes in our economy," Norris said. "That is why we also have programs and services for employers and workers alike that will assist them and their families through difficult times."

Noting the 6,280 job openings posted on Saskjobs.ca, Norris said that Saskatchewan remains the best place to be in Canada if you're looking for work.
