CELEBRATING HERITAGE WEEK IN SASKATCHEWAN

The province is celebrating its proud past. Today, Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Joan Beatty proclaimed Heritage Week, February 20th-26th.

"With the province celebrating its centennial, it's fitting that we take time during Heritage Week to think about our roots and celebrate our history of achievements," Beatty said. "Heritage tells us who we are, where we came from and gives us insight into where we can go in the future."

Heritage Day, a program of the Heritage Canada Foundation, is celebrated annually on the third Monday in February. This year, the Heritage Canada Foundation's theme for Heritage Day is Heritage of Faith; Spiritual and Sacred Places.

"Sacred and spiritual places, in particular, connect us and create a sense of belonging in communities," Saskatchewan Heritage Foundation Chairperson Dr. Bill Brennan said. "The Saskatchewan Heritage Foundation, in partnership with the J.M. Kaplan Foundation, works extensively with rural communities across the province to provide resources for restoring churches and sacred places."

During Heritage Week, communities throughout Saskatchewan are encouraged to commemorate the week with various heritage activities. Since 1991, the Saskatchewan Heritage Foundation has annually recognized Heritage Week so that Saskatchewan could acknowledge its participation in a national event that focuses some attention on the rich heritage of our province and country.
