PREMIER BRAD WALL PROCLAIMS APRIL 13, 2009 “CORNER GAS DAY” IN SASKATCHEWAN
Premier Brad Wall today proclaimed April 13, 2009 as Corner Gas Day in Saskatchewan. On April 13, CTV will air the series finale, "Good Night, You've Been Great."
Wall signed the official proclamation at the Legislature, where he was joined by series star and creator Brent Butt. Wall said he was pleased to pay tribute to the cast and crew of one of the most successful TV series ever produced in Canada.
"For six great seasons, Corner Gas has welcomed people from across Canada and around the world to our province, and made short work of the misconception that there's ‘not a lot going on' in Saskatchewan," Wall said, in reference to the show's theme song. "We want to thank Saskatchewan's own Brent Butt, the Corner Gas producers, cast and crew for many hours of laughter."
"I'm honestly humbled by this," Butt said. "It's a wonderful and much appreciated gesture by my home province to honour us in this way. It's the type of honour you don't even think about happening, so when it does, it makes you stand up and think: ‘Wow, maybe we really did something here.' "Plus, it's my buddy Dewey's birthday, so April 13 will no longer be his birthday, it will be Corner Gas Day. Sorry pal."
Corner Gas premiered on January 22, 2004. One hundred and seven episodes were produced over six seasons. The average Canadian audience has been about 1.4 million viewers, making Corner Gas the most watched comedy series in Canada. The show now airs in over two dozen countries around the world.
Corner Gas has been nominated more than 80 times for numerous awards, including an International Emmy Award, Gemini Awards, Leo Awards, Director's Guild of Canada Awards, Canadian Screenwriting Awards and Canadian Comedy Awards. The series has won six Gemini Awards, including Best Comedy Series.
