PROVINCE SUPPORTS WORLD MEN’S FASTPITCH CHAMPIONSHIP

The province is taking a swing and getting a hit by giving the Saskatoon Amateur Softball Association $100,000 to support the XII Men's World Fastpitch Championship.

The championship will be held in Saskatoon July 16-26, 2009 and will attract teams from 16 nations.

"We are pleased to be supporting this event," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Christine Tell said. "The World Men's Fastpitch Championship will bring some of the world's premier fastpitch players to our province. It is also predicted to potentially attract 14,000 sport tourists. This will help to enhance Saskatchewan's attraction as a tourist destination."

"The Saskatoon Amateur Softball Association is very excited to be hosting the highest profile softball event in the world," XII World Men's Softball Championship co-chair Keith McLean said. "Saskatoon is the first city to host the men's world championship for a second time. Our dedicated volunteers are ready to showcase our facilities, our city and our province while providing the fantastic hospitality that Saskatchewan has become known for. We expect the event will provide a great legacy for the city and province and are anxious to welcome visitors from all over Canada and the world."

Other organizations including the Saskatoon Hotel Association and the City of Saskatoon ($90,000) are also contributing to the championship.

"The City of Saskatoon is extremely proud to once again host this prestigious world championship event," Saskatoon Mayor Donald Atchison said. "We look forward to welcoming all players, coaches and spectators into our community to enjoy great sports action and warm hospitality."

The championship is projected to bring approximately $1.3 million to the province.

"Events such as this rely heavily on officials, coaches and volunteers whose dedication and support makes events such as this possible," Tell said. "I would like to recognize their efforts and commitment to helping build the quality of life we all enjoy."
