News Release - October 11, 2005 FIRE PREVENTION WEEK
The annual Fire Prevention Week is underway. It runs from October 9th to 15th and this year's theme is "Use Candles with Care: When you go out, blow out!"
Corrections and Public Safety Minister Peter Prebble will be visiting an elementary school during Fire Prevention Week to outline a new fire safety and prevention program for K-3 students. "I am pleased to be introducing a new program this year," Prebble said. "It was developed in partnership with British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba. The lessons learned by children will lead to life-long attitudes and behaviours, which is why the program focuses on fire prevention activities and messages for students in Kindergarten to Grade 3." This new initiative includes the distribution of a fun-filled children's fire safety activity booklet and corresponding lesson plan to involve both elementary school teachers and fire fighters at the local community level. The Saskatchewan Volunteer Fire Fighters Association is one of the organizations that requested proclamation of the week. "A requirement of the activity book is that it is partially done at school and completed at home with the involvement of the child's parents/caregivers to engage them in family fire safety," Saskatchewan Volunteer Fire Fighters Association president Dale Wagner said. The activity booklet contains an entry form for each student to enter into a draw for his or her school. One student from Hague Elementary School will be entered into the provincial grand prize draw for a home computer operating system.
