News Release - June 27, 2005 BUILDINGS NAMED IN HONOUR OF SASKATCHEWAN CENTENNIAL
Saskatchewan Property Management (SPM) is recognizing Saskatchewan's Centennial by naming several government buildings in honour of people or circumstances that have contributed to the history and growth of the province.
"When we think of the Centennial theme 100 Years of Heart, it's important to remember those leaders who founded Saskatchewan and have left a legacy of strength and prosperity in our province," Minister responsible for SPM Deb Higgins said. "It's very fitting to honour their lives, and the communities where they lived and worked with the permanent dedication of a building." During this centennial year, SPM will be announcing new names for six provincial office buildings - one in Meadow Lake, one in Tisdale, and four in Regina. The Meadow Lake building, which is the first in this series to be named, is unique in that it is not named after a former premier or MLA. Rather, it is being named Wiciwakan Place in honour of the special partnership that made the building possible. Wiciwakan is the Cree word for partner. Flying Dust First Nation Chief Percy Derocher is pleased the building will be named with a Cree word. "When we met with SPM and Meadow Lake Town Council to decide on a name, we thought we should recognize the partnership that was formed between Flying Dust First Nation and the government to construct this building." The Meadow Lake provincial office building was officially opened in March 2003. It provides office space for several government departments and is owned by Flying Dust First Nation. The next SPM building naming will take place in Tisdale during the community's homecoming celebration in late July. -30- For More Information, Contact:
