REPAIRS TO LEGISLATIVE BUILDING MAINTAIN HERITAGE ASPECTS

Work is underway on the preservation and rehabilitation of the exterior of the Saskatchewan Legislative Building.

A defined area is being rehabilitated to determine the best methods for preservation and to confirm the extent of repairs required to the building's exterior walls.

"The work being undertaken on this significant building demonstrates our commitment to our heritage resources," Government Services Minister Dan D'Autremont said. "This project will maintain the heritage aspects of the building while ensuring that is kept in good repair for the use and enjoyment of generations to come."

"The Legislative Building is the most recognized symbol of government in Saskatchewan," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Christine Tell said. "The Legislative Building and Grounds is a prominent historic place recognized as a National Historic Site, a Provincial Heritage Property and protected under Saskatchewan's Heritage Property Act."

The exterior masonry work focuses on repairing cracked, broken or displaced stone work, repointing of mortar joints and cleaning of the stone work. It will also address water management and drainage deficiencies and selective structural upgrades to the parapets and roof abutments. As well a strategy for upgrading the windows will be developed during the course of the project.

The work continues conservation efforts that began with the foundation upgrades in 1998 and is being led by the same project design team. It is expected that the restoration of the entire envelope of the building will be completed over the next several years.
