CROP REPORT FOR THE WEEK OF JUNE 27TH

Crop land topsoil moisture conditions improved during the past week, with drying in some areas and rain in others, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture, Food and Rural Revitalization's weekly crop report.

The number of areas reporting surplus moisture is down from last week, with over 90 per cent of crop land and 80 per cent of hay and pasture land reporting adequate topsoil moisture.

At least 70 per cent of fall cereal crops are reported to be in good to excellent condition, although more than half are behind normal development. About 78 per cent of spring cereal crops are in good to excellent condition, but over 80 per cent are behind normal development. Flax and canola crops are reported to be 66 and 64 per cent in good to excellent condition, respectively, but 85 per cent are behind normal development. Pulse crops are over 70 per cent in good to excellent condition, with three-quarters reported as behind normal development.

Pasture conditions have improved, with about 80 per cent in good to excellent condition, compared with about 65 per cent at the end of May. Overall availability of livestock water remains steady, with improvements in the northwest and declines in the west central area.

Early dry conditions, frost and cool weather in May and June have slowed haying operations. About two per cent has been cut, with less than 0.5 per cent baled or silaged.

The main sources of crop damage during the past week were frost and insects – specifically flea beetles and grasshoppers.
