The entrance to the new Cypress Regional Hospital was a scene of celebration this afternoon as Health Minister Len Taylor and local representatives conducted an official opening ceremony.

The $38.7 million Swift Current hospital serves as the health care hub for communities in southwest Saskatchewan. It opened for patients on April 27.

"Health care services are now stronger and more stable in southwest Saskatchewan, with a superb new regional hospital building," Taylor said. "This facility is designed to improve the safety and convenience of health care today, and into the future as part of our plan to reduce wait times and improve access to health care services."

"This facility is the result of a tremendous working relationship with our staff and physicians, Saskatchewan Health, our municipal councils, the Dr. Noble Irwin Regional Healthcare Foundation, and the design team," Cypress Regional Health Authority acting chair Ron Heeg said. "We are proud to officially open this new health care facility and look forward to the future benefits it will provide."

"The Cypress Regional Hospital represents the truly tremendous things that can happen when individuals and organizations work together toward a common goal," Swift Current mayor Sandy Larson said. "Our city was honoured to join the commitment made by southwest Saskatchewan municipal councils and residents in the funding of this project. This facility is already playing a vital role in the economic viability of the entire southwest corner of our province."

The 87-bed hospital provides general medical services, emergency room, surgical and obstetrical services, plus surgeries, an intensive care unit, mental health services, women's and children's health services, therapies and other services. Community health services, including home care, are now offered from the same building, allowing for more consistent care.

Funding for the new hospital came from Saskatchewan Health and Cypress Health Region, with contributions from the City of Swift Current, the Dr. Noble Irwin Regional Healthcare Foundation, regional municipalities, businesses and residents.
