GOVERNMENT SIGNS WINTER GAMES AGREEMENT IN MELFORT

The Government of Saskatchewan is providing $220,000 in funding to the Saskatchewan Winter Games, set for February 2006 in Melfort. The agreement was signed today and funding will come through the Saskatchewan Games Council.

"The Saskatchewan Games initiative is the Government of Saskatchewan's premier sporting event for youth," Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Joan Beatty said in Melfort. "The Winter and Summer games provide a development opportunity for Saskatchewan youth to launch athletic careers and to develop leadership and teamwork skills.

The Games also serve as a tool to develop Saskatchewan communities. Benefits include new and upgraded facilities, as well as volunteer and leadership development.

The agreement was also signed by the Saskatchewan Games Council, the City of Melfort and the Host Society.

"There are a great many people working hard to make these Games the most successful ever, and I commend them all," Beatty said. "I especially thank all the volunteers who are putting their hearts and souls into creating this opportunity for our young people.

The Saskatchewan Winter Games are set for February 12th-18th, 2006, in Melfort. Approximately 2,000 athletes, coaches and managers will converge on this central Saskatchewan city. Thirteen different sports will be contested, and an estimated 2,000 volunteers will ensure that all aspects of the Games go smoothly.
